Pedro Rodríguez of Guimaro was among the first growers who brought international attention to the remote region of Ribeira Sacra. Although his family was making wine as long as they remember, it was only in 1991 that they started bottling it, joining the newly created DO. They named their winery “Guimaro” (meaning “rebel” in Gallego) - as a tribute to Pedro’s grandfather. Continuing the work of his parents, Pedro has managed to bring the estate on to the next level. In early 2000 he collaborated with Rau´l Perez, who helped him realise the potential of the old plots of vines located on the steep, south facing slopes composed mainly of granite, schist, and slate. With time, the best parcels were identified, yields reduced, and organic farming implemented. In his effort to transmit the essence of the place, Pedro chooses to focus on the viticulture, keeping things simple in the winery. Guimaro Blanco is a wine based on Godello with approximately 35% of other native white grape varieties from different plots and villages. It is a wine that sings of years ago when wines like this were never varietal but always blends. A clean and fresh wine, that is fruit driven and has a lovely bay leaf herbaceous-ness to it.
